Major Contributions

The Institute has made significant contributions on different aspects of sericulture, and has so far released over 50 technologies and recommendations some of which are already commercialized and are popular among the sericulturists and other end users of the industry.

A few important technologies developed are listed below:

  • Three varieties of mulberry namely ‘Viswa’ (DD) ‘Vishala’, and ‘Thalaghattapura’  (TG).

  • Control measures for stem canker, root rot and root knot diseases of mulberry;

  • Nitrogen fixing and Phosphate solubilizing biofertilisers namely “Prakruthi” and “Seriphos” respectively.

  • “Harith  a foliar spray for better leaf production.

  • Hardy Bivoltine silkworm races namely, NP2-KSO1 ( “Rajatha Sampathu” )  and other  races CTM-NTCM, SL-KSPM, MH1, CN2 etc.

  • Standardized cold/hot acid treatment and egg preservation schedules for popular bivoltine silkworm races and its hybrids;

  • Chlorofect for disinfection of room and appliances;

  • ‘Suchi’ for personal hygiene during rearing;

  • Chawki Box (Isolation Chamber) for rearing young age silkworms for uniform, faster and healthy growth of chawki worms;

  • Shoot rearing technology which saves up to 50% labour, ensures higher intake of layings through better leaf utilization and 8-10kg higher yield of good quality cocoons per 100 dfls;

  • Two bed disinfectants, namely “Sanjeevini” for the control of grasserie and flacherie, and “Suraksha” for control of muscardine diseases of the silkworm;

  • “Chetana” a spinning inducer;

  • Uzi powder for control of uzi fly;

  • Improved reeling water management;

  • Peddle operated charaka for spinning silk from cut cocoons;

  • Reeling technology package consisting of hot air drying, vacuum cocoon boiling machine, denier indicator device, metallic buttons and other process parameters for improvement of raw silk yield and quality;

  • Optimization of process parameters for high twisted silk fabrics; and

  • Black box for silkworm egg incubation, Egg carrying box, Negative staining for pebrine spore identification, leaf chopping machine, Multipurpose pump, chopsticks, auto ignition falme gun etc., are other contributions.
